What is Red Light Therapy?
Red light therapy is a low-level laser or light therapy that uses specific wavelengths of red and near-infrared light to promote healing and improve cellular function. It works by stimulating the mitochondria, which increases the production of adenosine triphosphate (ATPcap A cap T cap P𝐴𝑇𝑃) and nitric oxide, leading to benefits such as increased collagen production, improved cell regeneration, and reduced inflammation.
Red Light Benefits
Skin Health
- Reduces signs of aging: Increases collagen production, which can reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
- Improves texture and tone: Helps create a more even skin tone and smoother texture over time.
- Treats skin conditions: May help with acne, eczema, psoriasis, and sun damage by reducing redness and inflammation.
- Promotes healing: Speeds up the healing process for minor wounds and acne scars.
Pain and Inflammation
- Reduces muscle and joint pain: Helps relieve pain and inflammation associated with conditions like arthritis, tendonitis, and muscle soreness.
- Speed up tissue repair: Stimulates cellular activity and improves blood flow, which helps repair damaged tissue and reduces inflammation.
Other Benefits
- Hair growth: May help stimulate hair follicles and improve blood flow to the scalp, promoting thicker, healthier hair.
- Mental wellness: Some research suggests it could improve mood, memory, attention, and reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression.
- Sleep quality: May improve sleep quality, potentially by influencing melatonin production.
- Wound healing: Can help accelerate the healing of cuts and burns.
- Athletic performance: May improve muscle performance when used several hours before exercise
Contraindications for Red Light Therapy
-Active or recent cancer: Red light therapy is not recommended for people with active cancer, and caution is advised for those with a history of skin cancer.
-Photosensitive Conditions: Individuals with conditions that increase sun sensitivity, such as lupus or porphyria, should avoid red light therapy.
-Active infections or fevers: Avoid using red light therapy until you have fully recovered.
-Pregnancy: Due to limited research and potential for increased skin sensitivity, Red Light Therapy is not advised
If you have any of these conditions talk to your doctor first
-Epilepsy: People with epilepsy should only use flicker-free devices, and it is best to consult a neurologist before use
-Thyroid Conditions: A doctor's clearance is needed, as some studies suggest avoiding treatment over the thyroid
-Eye Conditions: People with a history of eye problems, such as glaucoma, cataracts, or diabetic eye damage, should consult an eye specialist before use.
-Using Photosynthesizing Drugs: Avoid red light therapy if you are taking medications that increase light sensitivity. Consult your doctor first if you are on drugs like tetracycline, doxycycline, certain antibiotics, and some retinoids.
-Anti-inflammatory or Steroid Medications: You may need to wait at least seven days after starting these medications before undergoing therapy, as they can counteract the effects of the treatment.
-Surgical Implants and Procedures: Consult a doctor before use if you have surgical implants or have recently had Botox or dermal fillers. A waiting period of about five days is often advised after injections
